Overview
WordPress VIP, the enterprise division of Automattic, is the platform for building, maintaining, scaling, and measuring content experiences. Our suite of technologies, services, and integrations combine ease and flexibility with enterprise-grade scalability, security, and data-driven features, to help the largest companies in the world (like Meta, CNN, and Salesforce) build better digital experiences.
We’re looking for talented engineers to join our Parse.ly team to help evolve our analytics platform. Parse.ly helps digital storytellers at some of the world’s biggest sites (Arstechnica, The Wall Street Journal, and more) measure and optimize the impact of their content from first touch to last touch and everything in between. Parse.ly’s intuitive dashboard presents content performance insights from across billions of events in terms that everyone understands.
You are a senior developer who thrives on building and deploying user-friendly, high-impact applications. You have a sharp instinct for data visualization and can streamline complex, data-rich interfaces to make insights easily accessible. You like clean, modern JavaScript, and working at the intersection of product engineering, rapid prototyping, interface design, and data visualization. You’re passionate about open-source technologies, especially frameworks like Vue.js and D3.js. You bring an entrepreneurial spirit, and look for opportunities to apply new technologies in innovative ways.
Responsibilities
Engineers on the team are involved in every part of the product lifecycle:
- Discovery work and writing technical design proposals and documentation.
- Building, debugging, and testing (including writing automated tests and doing manual testing)
- Participating in release planning and roll-outs.
- Measuring impact and iterating.
Additionally, engineers are expected to:
- Comfortably navigate and understand backend codebases.
- Design novel implementations of data interfaces and visualizations using different data visualization libraries, such as Pandas, Numpy, and D3.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders.
- Analyze customer usage data to improve the user experience of existing and new features.
Requirements
- Production experience with JavaScript/TypeScript including one or more frontend frameworks. We mostly use Vue.js; you should either be familiar with it already, or the idea of using it every day should not be a blocker for you.
- Experience working with a large-scale client-side application to make it faster, more scalable, and fault-tolerant.
- Highly collaborative, with a strong enthusiasm for participating in code reviews and discussions about architecture, technical design, and solving customer problems.
- Experience with data visualization frameworks (Pandas, Numpy, D3, etc).
- Familiarity with writing accessible code and prioritizing inclusion before shipping any code.
- Customer-focused mindset, with good instincts on product design and user experience.
- Willingness to learn.
Extra Credit
- Experience with Python (and Django).
- Experience with ElasticSearch.
- Experience working with data—analyzing data, building data pipelines, Applied AI/ML, etc.
- Product management or product design experience.
- Open source contributions or contributions to programs designed to help underrepresented people enter the tech field.

We’re a distributed company with more than 1700 Automatticians in 92 countries speaking 110+ different languages. And, even more than growth and profitability (although we’re plenty profitable), above all, we’re driven by a mission: We democratize publishing and commerce so anyone with a story can tell it, and anyone with a product can sell it, regardless of income, gender, politics, language, or country.
We believe in Open Source, and the vast majority of our work is available under the GPL.
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at Automattic
We’re improving diversity in the tech industry. At Automattic, we want people to love their work and show respect and empathy to all. We welcome differences and strive to increase participation from traditionally underrepresented groups. Our DEI committee involves Automatticians across the company and drives grassroots change. For example, this group has helped facilitate private online spaces for affiliated Automatticians to gather and helps run a monthly DEI People Lab series for further learning. DEI is a priority at Automattic, though our dedication influences far more than just Automatticians: We make our products freely available and translate our products into and offer customer support in numerous languages. We require unconscious bias training for our hiring teams and ensure our products are accessible across different bandwidths and devices.
Automattic is a Most Loved Company and Disability Confident Committed. (Here’s what that might mean for you.) Learn more about our dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion and our Employee Resource Groups.
